In August of 2005 Six Flags New Orleans was closed in preparation for the arrival of Hurricane Katrina. More than six years later the park remains closed to the public but offers those willing to venture inside a rare snapshot of what the world looked like in the moments after the storm.
The Kinetic Grand Championship (previously the Kinetic Sculpture Race) is an annual 3 day race in Eureka, CA covering paved road, sand dunes, and open water. All participating vehicles are powered completely by kinetic (human) energy with awards given for Speed, Engineering, Most Artistic and the Grand Champion Award. This series from 2011 follows the Woody Endeavour and it's crew on their harrowing journey For The Glory.
The Los Angeles Burrito Project consists of a group of anonymous young men and women who meet once a week to assemble hundreds of burritos and deliver them on bikes to the hungry of Downtown Los Angeles. The ingredients for the burritos are purchased with money contributed by the LABP members themselves as well as donations from local restaurants. Every week the group distributes up to 400 burritos to members of their community who would otherwise go to bed hungry.
Stagebridge, the nations longest running senior theater company, hosts a week long Performing Arts Camp in Oakland, CA for men and women 50 and up. The campers spend the week taking classes ranging from stage acting and improv to tap dancing and stomp.
Helena David, with the help of her family and a few trusty volunteers, is on a mission to pick and donate 100,000 pieces of fruit in the year 2011. Helena's home grown non-profit organization (Those Who Care) uses it's website to connect with Southern California residents who are willing to have their fruit trees picked to be donated to local food banks. In May of this year she picked her 50,000th piece of fruit and is still going strong.
